Mastering the Art of Plant ID with Dr. Tim Smalley

Ever wondered how to tell a holly (Ilex) from a holly tea olive (Osmanthus)? Join us for a fun and interactive workshop with the legendary Dr. Tim Smalley, who spent 30 years teaching Georgia Master Gardeners how to identify common trees and shrubs.

In this hands-on session, Dr. Smalley will introduce you to 30 common woody plants of Charleston and share his insider tips for distinguishing even the trickiest lookalikes. With a focus on one key feature for each plant, you’ll quickly build confidence in identifying what’s growing in your landscape.

But that’s not all—Dr. Smalley will bring plenty of living specimens for you to touch, test, and practice your new skills! Whether you’re a novice gardener or a seasoned pro, this workshop promises to be engaging, educational, and a whole lot of fun.
