For over 50 years, Dr. Tim Smalley, a respected Horticulture Professor at the University of Georgia, has traveled the globe, exploring some of the most exquisite gardens in the world. Drawing from decades of experience, Tim has amassed a wealth of knowledge on the unique features, designs, and practices that make these gardens stand out. In his upcoming lecture, “Lessons from the Road: 50 Years of Inspiring Features from the World’s Best Gardens,” he’ll be sharing these insights with garden enthusiasts, designers, and anyone who loves the beauty of a well-crafted green space.

Dr. Tim Smalley, retired as a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus in the Horticulture Department at the University of Georgia in 2020, leaving behind an inspiring legacy of teaching and research. His horticultural journey has taken him from working as a student gardener at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, Scotland, to managing tree farms at Walt Disney World, and serving as the assistant director of the Cornell University Botanic Gardens.
During his 30 years at UGA, Dr. Smalley taught courses such as Nursery Management, Landscape Horticulture, Woody Plant Identification and Use, and even led the Art and Gardens of the Grand Tour Study Abroad program. His research included groundbreaking work on landscape soil amendments and the documentation of Georgia’s significant trees.
Dr. Smalley is celebrated for his engaging, hands-on teaching style that makes horticulture accessible and inspiring to everyone, from novice gardeners to seasoned professionals. His lectures combine his deep appreciation for plants, design, and sustainability with practical tips, leaving audiences feeling energized and informed.
