CHS Hort Lecture: Thomas Woltz

Join us on Monday, May 9 at 6:30 for our final CHS Hort Lecture of the season at Charleston Museum.

We are pleased to welcome Landscape Architect Thomas Woltz, owner of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW) as he speaks about A Hopeful Covenant for the Future of Land.

This lecture will cover a range of projects that exemplify NBW’s research-driven design process that yields some of the most engaging and dynamic contemporary landscapes in the country. Projects will include the Aga Khan Garden in Edmonton, Alberta, Centennial Park in Nashville, Memorial Park in Houston, and, with relevance to Charleston’s history, the master plan of Sylvester Manor, a slave owning plantation in Shelter Island, New York. Thomas will also speak about his personal garden in Charlottesville, VA.

A commitment to horticulture and the meaning it can impart is at the heart of every landscape designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW). What is most intriguing about NBW’s design philosophy is how they excavate the unique roots of that meaning in every site they touch. From small cultural institutions to massive urban parks and thousands of acres of regenerative farmland, the firm, led and owned by Principal Thomas Woltz, engages in building the biography of the land to tell its full story. Unafraid of difficult and complex histories, the firm’s work leads the profession of landscape architecture in re-establishing lost, forgotten, and hidden narratives while envisioning and building contemporary parks, gardens, and farms for millions of people to enjoy across the country and around the world.

NBW is currently engaged in four local projects in Charleston, including the Angel Oak Park on John’s Island and Comprehensive Planning for Middleton Place.

Lectures are sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts.
