  • MUSC Drug Discovery Building Auditorium 70 President Street Charleston, SC (map)

“Conservation Horticulture and Expanding Traditional Gardens Beyond Their Usual Roles”

Join us at 4:30 pm for our Annual Membership Meeting with light snacks and cocktails. We'll discuss the future of the HORT and welcome your input. Immediately following, we will kick off our Fall Lecture Series featuring Kelly Holdbrooks, Executive Director of Southern Highlands Reserve, who brings decades of experience in Western North Carolina horticulture.

A few items we will explore during our lecture that will bring their vision to your garden:

  • Integrating native plants into your garden to support local wildlife and promote conservation

  • Innovative methods to expand your traditional garden beyond its usual role

  • Success stories of transforming part of your garden into a haven for pollinators and other beneficial insects

Kelly holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the College of Environment and Design at the University of Georgia, where she graduated with honors. She also earned bachelor’s degrees in international studies and political science from Rhodes College and was a three-sport NCAA athlete. As a founding member of the Southern Appalachian Spruce Restoration Initiative, Kelly has built a network of conservationists dedicated to preserving the unique ecosystems of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

Kelly's passion for fostering human connections with nature is evident in all she does. She is a member of the Red Spruce Technical Advisory Board, working with The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service on regional conservation efforts. Kelly also participates in the quarterly All Lands Meeting held by the U.S. Forest Service to develop a collaborative long-term conservation plan.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn from Kelly Holdbrooks and be inspired by her dedication to preserving our natural heritage.
