Our popular Summer Workshop Series returns this August with more than double the lineup of classes we have offered in the past. These EIGHTEEN new classes have been curated based on the wonderful feedback from our CHS Workshop Survey sent to our membership this spring. From propagation and soil amendment to butterfly gardening and bonsai for beginners, this summer’s series will have something for just about every type of gardener you can imagine. Saturday August 17

ORGANIC VEGETABLE GARDENING 101
with Rita Bachmann of Rita’s Roots

Learn the ins and outs of setting up an organic vegetable garden to plant this Fall!  We will cover topics such as raised bed construction, soils, fertilization, planting calendar, watering, frost protection and pest management.  Class taught by Rita Bachmann of Rita’s Roots Backyard Harvest, a master vegetable gardener with over 15 years of experience.  Rita’s Roots Fall Transplant sale will be held one month after class, giving participants plenty of time to set up their gardens before Fall planting begins.

BEYOND THE BASICS CONTAINER GARDENING
with Alicia Wolf

Alicia Wolf, custom container designer/school teacher will teach you how to take your containers from boring to bold with inspired plant choices. Learn how to play with color, texture, and plant height, and how to think outside the box when putting together plant combinations. A container will be fully planted during the workshop and then raffled off to go home with a lucky winner! Bring cash for a chance to win. **

All Things Tropical:  Creating a lush, colorful tropical garden in our Lowcountry climate
with Nancy Hart

Learn what tropical plants are, why they’re so appealing and what cultural conditions make them thrive both in sun/shade exposure. Learn about which plants are cold hardy and how to protect the more tender tropicals during the winter. Nancy will teach you to propagate common tropical plants to increase your collection and even bring some of her favorite tropicals she’s personally propagated from her legendary garden to sell. **

CITRUS AND FRUIT GROWING FUN

with Darren Sheriff (The Citrus Guy)

Growing your own citrus fruit is a big deal anymore. Learn how to grow your own as Darren Sheriff a.k.a. The Citrus Guy talks you through sunlight requirements, fertilizers, watering, and the all-important cold protection.  Bring samples of any issues you are having, either in hand or in pictures, as there will be a Q&A afterward.

ORCHIDS 101

with Arlene Dean

Please join Arlene Dean, former vice president of the  Coastal Carolina Orchid Society, for a class on Orchids 101.  We will talk about the different kinds of orchids and their care, and there will be demonstrations on repotting various kinds of orchids.  Please feel free to bring an orchid, that you think may need to be repotted.

NATIVES IN THE GARDEN
with Jeff Jackson of the SC Native Plant Society

Landscape designer Jeff Jackson will walk us through how to choose native plants for our home gardens. We’ll learn why some work great, yet others won’t and are best admired in the wild. Come see all our bountiful nature has to offer us in the way of botanical diversity, and why it’s important that we incorporate these local treasures into our gardens.

THE BASICS OF BONSAI
with Bill Ferguson

William Ferguson, local bonsai expert(25 years) presents an enlightening look into the world of the Artistic Bonsai Arborist, from identifying the most desirable attributes that a one gallon home store plant can tell, to picking out the right tool for the job. Watch in amazement as the mysteries of the oriental art of bonsai are exposed, well not really, but some might surprise you. Any prior experience will probably just get in the way, come with an open mind.  Workshop trees [1gal mixed nursery plants $8-$10] will be available for purchase if desired.

PLANT PROPAGATION
with Sharon Coke, Horticulture Lab Technician at Trident Tech

Come for an hour of  Basic Plant propagation from Seeds to Cutting. All aspects will be covered . Learn how to collect and store seeds from local  gardens without leaving your footprint behind. How to root a specimen you acquire from your neighbor , Grandma, or community garden so you can expand your plant pallet in your yard . It’s all in carrying a proper plant procurement kit with you on your next outing.

HOME SOIL ANALYSIS WORKSHOP

with Sharon Coke, Horticulture Lab Technician at Trident Tech

Bring a 1 cup of soil from your yard and learn to do a Soil  Triangle based on composition makeup , determine your pH and fertility level in that area so you have a better understanding of how to amend your beds for long term planting. Testing supplies and Soil triangle will be provided.

*1 Cup soil needs to be a mix of  10 samples taken with a garden trowel to trowel depth. Mix samples in a plastic container. Only bring 1 Cup of sample,  Small bottled water ,Pencil,  and a Ruler to complete the analysis.

RAISING BUTTERFLIES
with Dwight Williams and Brenda LeFevre

Former director of Cypress Gardens Dwight Williams along with butterfly expert Brenda LeFevre will share their tips of establishing your own butterfly garden including selecting the proper host and nectar plants, the ABCs of raising butterflies and an in-depth discussion on the ins and outs of raising in captivity. Dwight will also provide a small selection of attractor plants for sale at the workshop. **

MEET THE BEES: BEEKEEPING, BIOLOGY & BLOOMS
with Cheri Ward of Blue Pearl Farms

Blue Pearl Farms beekeeper and co-owner Cheri Ward brings the bees to you with a workshop/demonstration of beekeeping and bee basics. What’s inside the hive, who does the work, and how does that honey taste…Farm-produced honeys, skin products made with beeswax and honey, and pollinator friendly plants will be sold. Join Mike for a colorful overview of how to grow and hybridize daylilies in the Lowcountry. HOME COMPOSTING FOR BEGINNERS
 with Brian Wheat

Avoid that stinky compost pile!  Participants will learn the science and mechanics behind establishing and managing a home compost system.  A variety of options will be introduced and reviewed and trouble-shooting delinquent or troublesome compost piles will be discussed. Regardless of whether you are a backyard chemist or set-it-and-forget it-type, there is something for you.

Directions
The CHS Educational Classroom is located in our offices at 46 Windermere Blvd. in the South Windermere Shopping Center. Turning into the shopping center from Folly Road follow S. Windermere Blvd down along the strip of shops where Starbucks is located. Our offices are the very last business on the right with a green awning. We are located across from the West Ashley Library at S. Windermere.

Parking
There is limited parking in front of our office but we recommend parking in the large lot in front of the library. Please refrain from parking in the back of the building as it is saved for employees of the shopping center.

Arrival:
To ensure our classes start on time and out of respect  for everyone in attendance, we ask that you make every effort to arrive at least 10 minutes in advance of the scheduled class time.

Class Substitution Clause:
If you cannot attend the class you signed up for, please let us know in advance and we will try to accommodate you into another class of your choice. You cannot substitute a class for another class without advance notice to the office at 843.579.9922 or by email at office@chashortsoc.org. If you are not on the class roster list upon arrival, you will be expected to pay before entering the class.

Cancellation:
If you suddenly are unable to attend please call our offices at 843.579.9922 ahead of the scheduled class so we can plan accordingly. Per our policy, class fees are only refundable with at least a 24 hour notice.
