Salvia coccinea, the blood sage, scarlet sage, Texas sage, or tropical sage, is a herbaceous perennial in the family Lamiaceae that is widespread throughout the Southeastern United States, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America. Winter hardy to USDA Zones 8-10., evenly moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. It is best located in full sun but appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot southern summers. It prefers sandy loams with sharp drainage.. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage additional bloom. Plants freely self-seed in warm winter climates.
