Our new children’s education program BLOOM is a re-imaging and expansion of our successful and celebrated Mobile Gardeners program, designed to offer a variety of educational opportunities for all children throughout the South Carolina Lowcountry.

From interactive workshops and activities with a kid-friendly slant to more in-depth partnerships such as our work with the CATR (Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding) program, our new BLOOM is ready to soar with educational opportunities for even the littlest of gardeners!

In partnership with our friends at Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding (CATR), a variety of dedicated CHS Hort volunteers spend their mornings working to empower school children with disabilities and special needs through interactive gardening and sensory activities at the Brickhouse Equestrian Center on 12 acres of land on Johns Island. Working alongside certified instructors and professionals, our volunteers spend valuable one on one time with these exceptional students from various Charleston-area schools to develop a trusting and rewarding experience with hands-on interaction with plants and plant material. This program, working in tandem with CATR’s horseback riding therapy program, provides valuable socialization, recreational and horticultural skills that can be adapted and made accessible in the home or in a recreational environment.
