20th Anniversary Appeal

This year has been exceptionally busy, new programs and partnerships have been adopted and several others are in the works. As we look to the New Year, we will continue to build relationships within our community, develop our children’s programs, and focus on sustaining CHS Hort for the next 20 years by attracting younger members with our new program for beginning gardeners.

Many of you attend our core educational programs, workshops, and lecture series and recognize the significance of these programs to the preservation and promotion of horticultural in the greater Charleston community.

Your commitment to CHS Hort has been pivotal in our ability to continue our mission. With 2020 just around the corner, we are asking you to consider a year-end donation in support of our many programs.

Because we feel it is important for you to choose how your contribution is used, we invite you to select one of the following areas to be designated for a donation.

Educate for Excellence in Horticulture: There was an overwhelming interest in our extended workshop offerings this year. So many professionals shared their knowledge with CHS Hort to provide opportunities for the growth of our members in many different facets of gardening. Our new, well received Study Garden programs offer a personal look into member gardens and their development from the ground up. Our long-standing lecture series continues as a key offering and attendance is greater than ever. Each year, the TTC Charleston Horticultural Society Scholarship, established in honor of CHS Hort Founding Member Patti McGee, continues to provide financial assistance to a deserving student pursuing the study of horticulture.

Community Partnerships: Community involvement is a priority, fundamental to our mission. Central to CHS Hort is our ability to reach out and share both our knowledge and wonderful volunteer base with other organizations in the Charleston area. Our new “Bloom” Children’s Program embraces children’s education through a partnership with the Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding Association (CATR). CHS Hort volunteers make a weekly commitment to work with exceptional children using simple garden tasks to develop the pride and health benefits inherent in the art of gardening.

Preserve and Promote: Many of you can trace your knowledge and understanding of the history and necessity for preserving the horticultural heritage of the Lowcountry to our docent course. The gold standard for garden docents in the community, the docent course has been a long-standing program promoting horticulture and preservation. Our new program, Digging Deeper will become the follow up to the existing Docent Course and will offer a more in-depth study into horticulture and preservation. Our partnership with Spoleto and The New York Garden Conservancy, Open Days, continues to delight visitors and residents with a tour of elegant private downtown gardens.

Events: In 2020, our 20th anniversary will highlight our Founders!  In addition, Plantasia continues to be an ongoing favorite as well as our January Oyster Roast, Holiday Greens, and Yeamans Hall speaker. Our Fall Tour of private gardens, focusing on a different area of our community each year, saw record attendance in 2019.

There’s so much more that we can do to benefit our membership and the greater community. You have walked our beautiful city and taken in both our private gardens and public spaces – a private and personal experience that defies the many changes in the City and continues to preserve the familiar connection to Charleston and its gardens. Pat Conroy put it best: “Charleston has a landscape that preserves intimacy and partnership.”

With your generous contribution, The Charleston Horticultural Society will continue its mission to educate, create partnerships, preserve and promote the intimate garden experiences of our lovely city. We look forward to your support in this, our 20th Anniversary year, Please let us know which programs you would like to support.
